Portfolio : Capturing History & Community

My Media Journey with the Gammon House

Design isn’t just about making things look good—it’s about telling a story, building connections, and preserving legacy. My collaboration with The George & Sarah Gammon House, a historic Underground Railroad site, was a powerful opportunity to do just that. From event promotions to merchandise design, I worked to capture the essence of their mission: honoring history while empowering today’s community.

In this portfolio blog, I’ll take you behind the scenes of my design process, the inspiration behind each piece, and how these visuals played a role in bringing the community together.

Event Logo Design for the Gammon House Juneteenth FatherFest

Preserving Legacy: Gammon House Juneteenth Event Logo

For The Gammon House’s annual Juneteenth FatherFest, I designed an event logo that would not only catch the eye but also capture the historical and celebratory essence of the occasion. The objective was to create a design that seamlessly combined tradition with a festive spirit, making it versatile for both print and digital platforms.

Brief:

For The Gammon House’s annual Juneteenth FatherFest, I designed an event logo that would not only catch the eye but also capture the historical and celebratory essence of the occasion. The objective was to create a design that seamlessly combined tradition with a festive spirit, making it versatile for both print and digital platforms.

1.Design Inspiration:

The logo was inspired by the rich history of The Gammon House as a stop on the Underground Railroad and the significance of Juneteenth as a celebration of freedom. Key elements included:

• Vintage-inspired typography: Chose a typeface reminiscent of 19th-century posters to honor the historical roots.

• Circular badge layout: Symbolizing unity and completeness, it also served as an effective focal point for event promotion.

• Classic black and gold palette: Representing resilience, heritage, and celebration.

Impact:

The logo became a central part of the event’s branding, used on everything from flyers and social media posts to event signage and merchandise. Its bold, recognizable look helped elevate the event’s visibility and reinforced The Gammon House’s mission of preserving history through community celebration.

Conclusion:

Designing this event logo was an opportunity to merge history and modern design, creating a lasting impression that not only represented the event’s spirit but also paid tribute to the legacy of The Gammon House.

“These designs helped reinforce The Gammon House’s mission of educating the community about local Black history.”

2. Annual FatherFest & Good Dad Awards

Design Objective: To celebrate fathers while reflecting the warmth and unity of the event.

Design Approach:

• Inviting visuals: Used soft, natural tones and warm images to create a family-friendly atmosphere.

• Bold typography: Ensured key details like event dates and times were easy to spot.

• Strategic branding: Incorporated The Gammon House’s logo and historical elements for consistency.

Outcome: High engagement and shares on social media, drawing attention to the event’s cause and boosting attendance.

3. Freedom Run T-Shirt Designs: Before & After

Challenge:

To update and brighten the event t-shirt design while keeping historical integrity.

Solution:

• Color Refresh: Moved from a dark olive to a lighter green per client’s request for a more lively and energetic feel.

• Vintage-inspired typography: Maintained the original type style to preserve the historical aesthetic.

• Enhanced readability: Adjusted contrast for better visibility of the design details.

Result: Positive feedback from participants who appreciated both the refreshed look and the nod to history.

Key Elements:

• Event announcements: Bright, eye-catching designs for upcoming events.

The Power of Purpose-Driven Design

Working with The Gammon House was a reminder of why I love what I do—using design to tell stories that matter. By blending historical elements with modern design techniques, I was able to create visuals that not only looked appealing but also served a greater purpose.
